Parks for Birding in Mendocino
MacKerricher State Park
Up the coast near Fort Bragg, you will find MacKerricher State Park. A great spot for birding is to either head to the tide pools or the observation point. There you will see birds in flight and on the ground. After enjoying the birds, be sure to head over to Glass Beach, a unique attraction!
Montgomery Woods State Reserve
Head inland for a quick drive to Montgomery Woods. It’s a small park that has a winding trail that is easy for any type of walker. There are some of the tallest trees found here and beautiful redwoods are here too. Here you will also see different species of birds who love to live in the tall branches.
Jughandle State Reserve
This state park is back on the coast and besides being a Mendocino birding hot spot, it has some interesting attractions of its own. Be sure to take a stroll on the Ecological Staircase. It is 2.5 miles and starts on the beach and works up. Each “stair” you are on is a moment in time. They were formed by waves, glaciers, and tectonic activity. You should not miss seeing so many birds in different ecosystems so close together.
Russian Gulch State Park
Another Mendocino park that combines the ocean and the forest. It is a spectacular spot for Mendocino birding. There is paved road as well as typical trails so many can enjoy the views. Certain trails do link up with nearby Jackson State Forest for more walking and fun.
Mendocino Headlands State Park
If you are looking to stay close to town, then be sure to check out Mendocino Headlands State Park. They have trails that follow the ocean and around the headlands. Not only do many love going birding here but it is a prime location for whale watching. Before you head out, be sure to visit the Historic Ford House.
Ten Mile River
The area known as Ten Mile River is known by many different names. You can hear it being called Ten Mile River, Beach, or Haul Road. They are all the same and it is a great place to go Mendocino birding. It is a ten-mile stretch that follows the coast and was once a lumber hauling road. It also is near MacKerricher State Park so you can see both areas very easily.
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
If you truly want to immerse yourself in birding in Mendocino, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a great place to start. Not only do they have gardens of flowers that attract the birds but they are on the coast as well. Be sure to sign up for one of their fun Bird Walk Series as well.
