California historical landmarksWhen deciding to travel, there may be a reason or two why you pick a certain place. It could be because of a certain restaurant or attraction or that the area is known for something that you are interested in. All over the U.S., we have a ton of history to share with visitors as well as just as many landmarks. Here in California we are filled with interesting stories and facts to share. We at Sea Rock Inn have guests of varying interests and when our history lovers come to town, we have to share with them these amazing California historical landmarks. Come with us and see how you can explore the rich history of Mendocino County with these historical landmarks.

First on our list is a place that is simply beautiful and, out of these California landmarks, one that is perfect for those sticking close to Mendocino: the Kelly House Museum. The Kelly House Museum has been around since 1972 and has one sole purpose, to collect and persevere the history of Mendocino. Located near the Mendocino Headlands State Park and is open for tours and visitors 4 days a week. We highly suggest booking a tour with them where you will get to learn so many fantastic things about our area.

Next up in our list of Northern California historical landmarks is in Fort Bragg, only a quick drive away. Head over to the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society. This society is filled with people who love our history as well as showing off our local California history. They have walks available during the warmer months for locals as well as visitors on Fridays and Saturdays for walks around downtown Fort Bragg to observe and talk about the local California historical landmarks. You can also choose a historical cemetery walk that happens once a month as well.

For those of you who enjoy all sorts of history and California historical landmarks, we suggest heading over to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church. This church has been around since the beginnings of Mendocino and is the first church in Mendocino. It was built in 1858 and had 8 charter members and was presided over by Peter Kelly. Church services still are held the modern church. Be sure to take your time when you visit the church, there is a lot to see.

The last of our local California historical landmarks that you should definitely see is the Time and Maiden Statue which stands on top of the old Mendocino Bank. While the building may have changed hands a few times, the statues still remain. Built in the 1860s as a home to the local Masonic Lodge, these two are symbols to the Masons. The statues were carved from redwood by Erik Jensen Albertson and are just as beautiful as when he carved them. Want to learn more about the statues? Ask a local Mason!
