Free Things to Do in Mendocino 

Jug Handle State Reserve 

Take a Hike! One of the best ways to explore Mendocino and take in all the natural beauty is by hitting one of the many trails. Jug Handle State Reserve boasts six miles of hiking trails that will showcase some of the most fantastic ocean views. The reserve also has tidepools, wildlife, and wildflowers, making this the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring the California coast.

Visit Noyo Harbor Beach Noyo Beach

Noyo Harbor Beach is a working harbor where you can watch the fishing boats come in and out. Located just 15 minutes north of Sea Rock Inn, this is a great place to take a stroll, have a picnic, or try your hand at fishing! You can also purchase some of the fresh-caught fish to cook up for dinner. Dogs can also be off leash at this beach, so Fido can tag along! 

Glass Beach 

Fort Bragg is home to one of California’s most unique beaches – Glass Beach! As you walk along the shore, you’ll find colorful shards of glass that have been tumbled smooth by the waves. The best time to visit is at low tide when more of the beach is exposed. 

Ford House Visitor Center & MuseumFord House Museum

The Ford House Visitor Center & Museum is the perfect place to learn about Mendocino’s history. The museum has interactive exhibits that are fun for the whole family! The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, so add this stop to your list of activities! Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Montgomery Woods State Nature Reserve 

This old-growth redwood forest is the perfect place to take a peaceful hike and experience some of Mendocino’s incredible flora and fauna. Montgomery Woods State Nature Reserve has over 20 miles of hiking trails that you can explore for hours! Keep your eyes peeled for rainbow trout in the creek and deer roaming through the woods. Hiking in these woods is a great way to escape into a California paradise!
