What You Need to Know About the Jug Handle State Reserve Before Your Visit
What Is the Jug Handle State Reserve?
The Jug Handle State Reserve is one of the most beautiful parks in Mendocino, and in the whole of Northern California. It’s one of our favorites due to its beauty, but also because it’s five minutes away from our B&B. The park was named after Jug Handle Creek—which runs through it—and covers 776 acres along Route 1.
This beautiful reserve boasts many stunning ocean views and serene forests. The park was established in 1976 after a fight to preserve it from logging and real estate development.
Jug Handle State Reserve is an amazing location for hiking. If you’re looking to get out in nature and reconnect with your true self, there’s no better place. You have several options when it comes to hiking trails. If you want to have an easy walk, the Headlands Loop is made for you. This 0.5-mile trail is mainly flat and takes you past lovely prairies, tall trees, and the rugged coastline.
If you want to challenge yourself a bit more, the Ecological Staircase Trail is perfect. It’s a five-mile round-trip with a 300- elevation gain. You’ll discover interesting geological areas, dramatic beach views, coastal bluffs, and of course, the lush forest. Be sure to bring a picnic along!
