What You Can Do at the Mendocino Headlands State Park

 

General Information

As the Scout’s motto rightfully says: be prepared. The more you know about your destination, the more you’re able to enjoy it! Mendocino Headlands State Park surrounds Mendocino on three sides. This vast park is especially interesting because of its different types of terrain. Visitors free to explore the park’s treasures during the day, and trust us, there are many!

You can find parking just off of Highway 1, and access to the park is free. If you require a wheelchair or special accessibility, we recommend you call the park directly at (707) 937-9172 or email access@parks.ca.gov.


Hike Along the Coast!

Hiking is the most popular activity at Mendocino Headlands State Park. With trails ideal for a leisurely stroll, the park is perfect for a romantic date or a fun hike with friends. Remember to bring your camera because the views along the way are simply breathtaking!

Make your way around the rugged cliffs that showcase the natural beauty of the area. During the warmer months, you can enjoy refreshing ocean breezes and blossoming flowers in a variety of colors. You may even see dolphins in the waves below! In the fall and winter, be on the lookout for whales. Whale watching is a popular activity that draws thousands of visitors each year.

Explore the Surroundings

If you are interested in local history, Mendocino Headlands State Park offers that as well. Stop by the Historic Ford House which serves as the Visitor Center for the park. Here, you can learn more about the history of the area and peruse old photographs and artifacts in permanent exhibits. You’ll get to see what life was like during the beginning of the Redwood foresting days. This circa 1854 home has a broad selection of items on display; they go all the way back to the days when the Pomo Native Americans lived in the area.

End your trip with a glorious sunset at Big River Beach! You can access this favorite beach by car or by hiking trail. Enjoy a late picnic on the sandy shore, dip your toes in the water, or simply relax and soak in the beautiful scenery in front of you.
