Experience Mendocino like never before with the help of our free Vacation guide. It has additional recommendations for outdoor adventures, local restaurants, events, museums, shops, and more!
3 Things to Do On Your Russian Gulch State Park Adventure
Russian Gulch State Park is so close to our B&B that it’s the ideal activity for guests. It’s just a few miles north of Mendocino on Highway 1. Make sure you prepare for your expedition; pack water, high socks, and a map of the area so you don’t get lost. Cell service is very limited in the park.
Another thing you’ll want to consider is your clothing. When hiking in California, it is always best to dress in layers, since the weather can change quickly. We recommend a T-shirt, long-sleeve jacket, long hiking pants, and hiking boots.
Tip: Before your visit, check with the main office to see when the park opens and closes. (The hours are not listed on their website.) You can call the office at (707) 937-5804.
Hiking Trails and Attractions
Russian Gulch is a great hiking spot, and the trail system is easy to navigate. The Fern Canyon Trail, for example, is only a mile long and passes a beautiful waterfall as well as some redwoods. If you take the Headlands Trail, you’ll encounter one of the park’s most famous attractions: the Devil’s Punch Bowl. This large, collapsed sea cave is always churning water straight from the sea. Make sure you stop to see the “blowhole”, too! This tunnel was formed by waves pounding against the rock. If you visit at high tide, you can look into it and watch as the sea comes in and out.
Have a Scenic Picnic
There are many fun things to do at Russian Gulch State Park in addition to hiking. A romantic picnic is a wonderful way to enjoy a snack amongst the inspiring natural scenery in the park. If the weather is warm, you can even go for a swim and explore the surrounding tide pools.
